This ones going to tickle your funny bone and at the same time make us put on our thinking hat 💡. I am going to talk about a common experience which has become a part of our daily life - "Riding" / "Driving" on Indian roads, P.S it is like going on a battle field which surprisingly was not the case two decades ago. I have been riding/driving since I was 18 and it has been a gradual transition from pleasurable driving to feeling like a "legendary Spartan" on road . Actually to be honest we all role play every other super hero in action fighting against each other especially during the so called "peak hours". Right from being a power puff girl to the avengers, we transform ourselves constantly while on or behind the wheels. There are different situation and scenarios we come across on daily basis which has led to enhancing our vocabulary of profanity.
"The Indicator Concept" - as a matter of fact the use and reason of indicators in vehicles has gotten "Extinct". Like the 3 famous monkeys , we see no indicator, we hear no indicator and we follow no indicator. You see people moving ahead like angry birds(zoop zoooop) from the very same side you have turned on your indicator to take the same turn. Then you have another situation where people turn on their indicator to right but take a left or rather keep driving in the middle of the road. (this is a no sense of direction theory). The third kind, you see vehicles taking a sudden turn with NO indicator at all, it is like you need to develop a super power skill on guessing the move of the vehicle beside or ahead of you. Then we have THE "Power Rangers" who come flying (ssswwwiiiiiissshhhhh) from the extreme left and cut every one off because "ooppppssss" they realised they need to take a right turn and this is where we need to showcase our psychic powers to know the enemies next move on the road. The indicators are not just aesthetic show pieces, please use them efficiently. A side note - ones sudden hand signal out of no where is NOT equivalent to an indicator.
Moving on, lets talk about our Tom cruises , Hrithik Roshans , Rajnikanths and Paul Walkers on the roads. So these folks have woken up with the incarnations of our movie hero's . They have this make belief of starring in a self version of Fast and Furious. Everyone on the road is oblivious to their knowledge and they are on a world saving mission and ride the way they like and feel like. I am yet to understand those twirly twirls of the bikes moving between vehicles. They take pride and utmost joy in riding their bikes zwisshh zwasshhh and harassing the crap out of others. These hero's sometimes have a female pillion rider, and riding to impress her is the only modus operandi for them. The co travellers can go take a hike while their love story is blooming on the road on the cost of everyones blood pressure going high. Interesting part is even the female pillion rider takes the incarnation of Angelina Jolie or Priyanka chopra by drooping over her guy with wind in the hair. That's when i get a thought "Helllooooo - where is your helmet lady" and take your love story off the road.
Then off course we have the veteran lane cutters. These people think they are born with a super privilege card of changing / cutting lanes at any given point of time without considering the vehicle coming from behind or from any direction. And whats with the bikes, they are on a mission of not leaving even an inch of space between vehicles on the road. They are like these mouse that find their way ahead from the tiniest of space between two vehicles. The fun part is while they try to squeeze themselves(not so skillfully) they either scratch the edges of the car or the rear view mirrors are knocked , oh wait it does not stop there , then you get multiple responses, some wobble their heads and say sorry, some just ignore and move ahead (as if they care a hoot), some just stare back at you and some give the very famous hand signal which i have no clue what it means.
Then erupts the gender war - "Ladies First" is NOT APPLICABLE on road. Everyone is equal when riding/driving. The rules do not change based on your gender. So ladies stop expecting special treatment while you are on wheels and follow the road rules just like others. Men please stop having ego issues on roads when you see a lady driver overtaking you. If you are OK with a man overtaking you , please be OK with a woman doing the same. Then off-course we have our beloved public transport vehicles, people think if they are driving a government vehicle they are NOT obliged to follow any rules. The road and the city belongs to them and hence they will drive wherever and whenever and however, and WHY? because neither the vehicle nor the passengers are related to them , so their safety is not a concern. And what are these creatures called Auto and Shared Auto ? They are like those rackety tackety mean machines that appear from anywhere to disrupt the world. Once upon a time i had this thought that Auto and shared auto are means of someones bread and butter and also convenient for people to travel with low budgets. But now i feel sorry for myself on their existence because they cause a havoc for everyone . We have a simple 2 lane concept in our country, right and left and we are to follow the same direction. How on earth is it OK to come from the opposite right side on a left sided lane ? Ohhh and the wrong side folks have absolutely no guilt on doing this. When you show your annoyance they in turn show you offending hand signals. Phew!!! can it get any more pathetic.
You see people running and crossing the busy main roads when the vehicles are moving at a speed, and the most ridiculous part is they think of crossing just when the signal turns green( for a minute) for us to move ahead and the exhilarating episode is when they show their hand towards the fast moving cars to stop, so they can cross the road at a speed of a "SNAIL" .You will also spot "Alice in wonder land" crossing at their very own leisure. Its is like they take this sadistic pleasure on testing your patience, Why would you do that? The flustering scene is to see people crossing when there is a foot over right above their heads 😔 Sigh!!
Trust me I can go on and on about it, but i need to stop rather we need to stop . Stop acting selfish and inconsiderate to other humans on roads. Everyone is in a hurry, everyone needs to reach somewhere but that doesn't mean we put lives at stake. Are you not concerned about the safety of your own people? Is this what the next generation is imbibing from us? to be more uncultured and inconsiderate ? There is this recent string of ads that a popular actor is doing on road safety and road rules. On breaking the rules he very sarcastically states "Yeh aapke Baap ka road nahi ?" (Oh! this road does not belong to your father) lol I find it hilarious and at the same time it is sad , that in spite of all the education and awareness we still need ads, articles and blogs on this. If only we all unitedly followed rules, we would not be tiring ourselves over driving which is considered to be a pleasurable task. We would save both, time and lives !! Please forward this ahead, even if 1 out of 100 reads this and realises to follow rules, we are then on our way of triggering a positive change.
Happy and Safe Riding/Driving peeps ! Until next time.......👍
