Before I started writing this piece, out of curiosity I consulted "Google" uncle on the definition of "Modernisation" and it threw a couple of similar definitions at me. As a matter of fact modernisation is the transition from traditional , rural society to urban and modern society....hmmmmmmm.....I always believed that certain logic's and words are comprehended with a slight variance by each individual. Perception and all you see. In today's era everyone talks about being so called modern. Till quite an extent one is termed modern, when you wear western clothes, speak English, are not very religious, using slang and profanity (apparently the new "cool") etc. This is something I totally differ from. A person is now rated modern more on the outlook instead of the actual Alma matter and the attitude towards life and others.
For me modernisation is accepting others as they are, giving space and freedom , respecting all the cultures and their followers , non interference , not judging people on their decisions, having liberal views, to name a few . What kind of pseudo modern society are we still living in ?? Or to correct myself here what kind of pseudo modern Society have we formed ?? we are still in that confused state of mind where we find it hard to get the real meaning and gist of what Modernisation is all about.
Wearing fancy pants and bad mouthing about someone Else's life choices is not called modern, dining at fancy restaurants and being impolite to the staff is not modern, talking crap about someone Else's religion or culture is not modern.
Modernisation branches out from the roots of your thoughts and actions and not by just your attire and language. You dont have to look modern to be modern.
Recently i encountered something funny, i had to wear hijab at work as i was juggling between work and prayer sessions. When i walked into my office i received a mix of reactions. Some were pleasantly surprised and happily curious, some gave me a weird weary look and some just chose to look past me. Someone even came up to me and said you are so modern( reason my clothing and lifestyle choices) and its shocking to see you in traditional clothes and hard to believe that you are religiously following your culture. So basically there is no concept of being balanced. Its like either you are a total whacked up character or you are a cultural dogma. How are we even defining what is modern and what is not ??. I am proud of my culture and enjoy best of both the world's. Why do i even have to be tagged modern or not modern. This is just one of the example i stated here and im sure a lot of you will have more to add.
All in all, modernisation is the approach towards broadening the horizons of ones thought process , by uplifting people and communities , by cultivating unity, spreading awareness and education , by improvising better approach with less co lateral damage. Do we even think on these lines?? So next time when we use the word modern we need to be more mindfull on how, when and where !!
